7/5/2026 5 Comments LOT 40An Old House in Paris by Daniel Gray-Barnett Description This book building/book-nook was originally created for a community library exhibition, celebrating the richness and diversity of our communities. I wanted this piece to celebrate books, which have always been a safe haven for me. In particular, it is based on my favourite book, Madeline by Ludwig Bemelmans, which has in turn inspired much of my work as a children’s book illustrator. It has also been a favourite book to read together with my son, who is autistic like me. You might spot us in the old house, reading a book together. Medium: Acrylic ink and collage on cardboard Illustrator Bio Daniel Gray-Barnett is an award-winning illustrator and author based in the Huon Valley, lutruwita/Tasmania.
A self-taught artist, he once studied Medical Science at the University of Sydney before realising storytelling had a far lower mortality rate. His books have been recognised by the Children’s Book Council of Australia, the Society of Illustrators, and the International Youth Library, and he has collaborated with Children’s Laureates Sally Rippin (Australia) and Joseph Coelho (UK). Daniel is autistic and a passionate advocate for neurodivergent creatives, LGBTQIA+ rights, children's literacy and the power of storytelling. He has been a judge for the Prime Minister's Literary Awards, a peer assessor for Arts Tasmania and regularly speaks to kids (and grownups!) about why books, stories, art and being creative is so important. Daniel lives with his husband, kids, and dogs and hopes to tell a few more stories before turning into a grumpy old man.

7/5/2026 6 Comments LOT 38 Regal Moths With Black Walnut by Hykie Breeze Description A study of a pair of regal moths with Black Walnut. I was very taken with the striking contrast of the deep orange against blue. I painted this right before working on my first published book, Ella and the Amazing Frog Orchestra, and no doubt the colours seen here directly influenced the colours of the book cover too. Acrylic gouache on Dodgy Paper’s handmade recycled paper, 2023 Dimensions are A4 Illustrator Bio Hykie Breeze is an illustrator and graphic designer, born in Hong Kong and now fortunate enough to be living and working in Sydney (Dharawal country).
Hykie is the illustrator for the Ella and the Frogs series, written by Cassy Polimeni. The first in the series, Ella and the Amazing Frog Orchestra, was honoured on the CBCA Notables List for Younger Readers in 2025. Her most recent work is ‘The Clueless Guide to Solving a Mystery’ by Samera Kamaleddine, with a sequel on the way. Hykie lives with her husband, very active toddler son and two rescue cats. 7/5/2026 2 Comments LOT 37 SAND AND SUN by Jennifer Horn Description This original double-page spread illustration appears in the picture book "Juniper's Painting" (by Catherine Bauer, Wombat Books 2025), where Juniper is adding to her painting the sun and people walking along the sand. It is how she wishes the weather outside was, as opposed to the rainy blustery day it actually is. I experimented with inserting the painter into the painted here, making Juniper part of her colourful artwork but still from the monochromatic ‘real world’ where the tone is bleak and grey. Also trying to draw like a 5-year-old is always fun. Watercolour and pen liner on A3 hot pressed paper Illustrator Bio Jennifer Horn is a Brisbane-based illustrator and children’s writer. She has illustrated for Wombat Books’ junior fiction Skippy Blackfeet by Rebecca Fraser as well as picture book Juniper’s Painting by Catherine Bauer. Her fairytale debut picture book The Precious Plum was shortlisted for the 2022 Little Pink Dog’s Authorstrator Prize. She illustrated the cover of Anthology Angels’ children’s fundraising anthology of 2021, Once Upon a Whoops!: Fractured Fairytales and Ridiculous Rhymes and her short stories have appeared in each of these annual publications since 2018. Two Young Adult short stories, Faulty Connection and What Aunt Maud Achieved, have been published in Rhiza Edge’s dystopian and sci-fi anthologies, Crossed Spaces and Stepping Sideways, respectively. She was awarded Second Place in the Published Illustrators category for her illustration On The Move at the 2023 CYA Conference.
With a background in Architecture, Jen draws on her love of stories and adventure to create whimsical illustrations in a Quentin-Blake-inspired squiggle style. She co-hosts the Book Review program on local community station Reading Radio, where she enjoys reading books ‘with all the voices’. She has also been part of Art Department teams on several Brisbane-based films, including Binge’s A Savage Christmas, Stan’s Christmas on The Farm, and Netflix’s Romance on the Menu.  Everything Times Two by Elizabeth Misek Description Everything Times Two is a double-page spread from Peek-a-Boo, Here Comes Two, written by Chantel Volker and illustrated by Elizabeth Misek. Created in Elizabeth’s traditional watercolour and pencil style, this piece captures the creativity and imagination of childhood, with playful little details hidden throughout the illustration. Handprints can be found on the bean bag, door handle and hallway wall, linking this moment to another spread in the book where the painting first began.It is offered as a signed print, number 2 of 2 from a printed pair. Paper size: A3 (420mm x 297mm) Printed on high-quality Cotton Rag 310 gsm. Illustrator Bio Elizabeth Misek is an award-winning picture book illustrator and author from the Hunter Valley, Australia.
Working in traditional watercolour and pencil, Elizabeth creates unique worlds full of emotion and movement. Places characters can live in and children can return to again and again. She won the New England Illustration Prize for Children’s Picture Book Publishing in 2023, and has since illustrated picture books including Peek-a-Boo, Here Comes Two by Chantel Volker. As an autistic and dyslexic creator, Elizabeth brings a deeply felt, visual way of seeing to her work. The tree grows until the protagonist is finally able to climb it. The picture was not included in the book, because I preferred a watercolour style over a collage one.
